Pure Heart – James 4:7-8

7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

– James 4:7-8 (NLT)

James noticed that worldliness was pervading the Christian community in the early church. He urged them to resist the devil and repent from their sinful ways. Telling them to wash their hands, a symbol of repentance, and turn away from being double-minded, serving self and God. For them to turn away from sin and serve God.

We need to obey God, be humble, and come close to God. When we move toward God, He moves closer to us. We need to live according to Jesus’ teaching. Purifying our hearts, letting go of worldly ways, and loving the Lord your God with all our hearts.

Jesus replied: ” โ€˜Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.โ€™

Matthew 22:37 (NIV)

A pure heart characterized by an absence of impurity and contamination. A pure heart has openness and integrity, which are essential for a deep relationship with God.

It is time to quit playing in the worldly field, to repent from sin, purify our hearts, and love God with all our heart, soul, and mind.

7-10 So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him make himself scarce. Say a quiet yes to God and heโ€™ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field.

James 4: 7-8 (MSG)

โ‚

Our Heavenly Father, help us to realize what is important in life. Guide our steps and teach us to rely on Your guidance. Thank You for Your love, grace, and forgiveness. Help us to turn away from worldliness and sin and have a pure heart. As Dianthus flowers are gathered close together, turning toward the sun, let us draw close to You and follow Your Son, Jesus. Amen

Reflected – Proverbs 27:19

As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.

Proverbs 27:19 (NLT)

Reflections are visible in calm water; its mirror-like qualities reflect the item. In still water, a face is reflected as a face.

A person’s heart, inner thoughts, and attitudes reflect the real person. In Jeremiah, it says that hearts can be wicked and deceitful.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)

When we look in a mirror, we examine our faces; we also need to examine our hearts to see what we are reflecting. Our heart is the origin of our moral decisions. We should check our hearts to confirm our inner thoughts are not evil but holy, pure, and good. Our heart reflects us showing the real person.

โ‚

What are the thoughts of your heart reflecting about you?

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love, mercy, and grace. Like still water reflects items, let Your love be reflected in our hearts. Guide us to maintain inner thoughts that are wholesome, pure, and good. As flowers reflect in still water, let us reflect and glorify You through good works. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Proven Worker – 2 Timothy 2:15

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.

– 2 Timothy 2:15 -16 (NIV)

In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he encourages him to be a worker who seeks to please God rather than people. Worldly things can distract, worldly problems can draw attention away from God. Instead of trying to please people and make them happy, work to please God; be a proven worker who needs not be ashamed.

A proven worker teaches the word of truth accurately striving to understand and correctly explain God’s Word to others. To help those who indulge in worldly, godless chatter and vain babbling, which leads to godless behavior, by teaching them the truth.

Paul’s challenge is to do our best to present ourselves as an approved, proven worker who understands and explains the truth of God’s Word.

Concentrate on doing your best for God, work you wonโ€™t be ashamed of, laying out the truth plain and simple. Stay clear of pious talk that is only talk. Words are not mere words, you know. If theyโ€™re not backed by a godly life, they accumulate as poison in the soul.

– 2 Timothy 2:15 -16 (MSG)

โ‚

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, help us to listen and do our best work for You. Guide us to avoid worldly distractions and focus our sights on You. May we be proven workers guided by Your Word and truth. Let us gather together like the colorful open blossoms of the Penta plant and be open to Your direction, teaching Your truth accurately. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

Merciful: Luke 6:36-37

36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.  37 โ€œDo not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.

Luke 6:36-37 (NASB)

Mercy is the act of withholding deserved punishment. Mercy is the act of having mercy on others, not prejudging or condemning our foes. God’s mercy has saved us from our sins, and He wants us to show mercy towards others. Our focus should be on being merciful rather than judgmental, emulating our Holy Father.

โ€œBlessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

Matthew 5:7 (NASB)

To judge is to form an opinion or conclusion about another person; to condemn is to find someone guilty deserving of punishment. Instead of having hardened hearts and condemning others, if we forgive and pardon others, God will pardon us.

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Matthew 6:14

God loves us and wants us to love one another, being merciful, kind, and forgiving.

35-36 โ€œI tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without expecting a return. Youโ€™ll neverโ€”I promiseโ€”regret it. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when weโ€™re at our worst. Our Father is kind; you be kind. 37-38 โ€œDonโ€™t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faultsโ€”unless, of course, you want the same treatment. Donโ€™t condemn those who are down; that hardness can boomerang. Be easy on people; youโ€™ll find life a lot easier. Give away your life; youโ€™ll find life given back, but not merely given backโ€”given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.โ€

Luke 6:35-38 (MSG)

โ‚

In your dealings with others, are you judgmental or merciful and kind?

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your mercy and grace. Teach us to be non-judgmental, merciful, and forgiving. Help us to be sympathetic and compassionate. As the small geranium flowers cluster together, forming beautiful blooms, let us cluster together in harmony, reflecting God’s love. In Jesus Holy name. Amen

Treasures: Matthew 6:19-21

19 โ€œDonโ€™t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Matthew 6:19-21 NLT

In these verses, Jesus is explaining to His followers how to live and act. Our life should not revolve around earthly treasures, which are easily lost or destroyed. Instead, we should store our treasures in heaven by living the way God asks us to live, by loving our neighbor as ourselves, guarding against evil, helping the less fortunate, and loving the Lord with all our hearts.

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

Matthew 22:37b

Where is your treasure? Is it on worldly success and building wealth?

If so, that’s where the desire of your heart is; what your heart is focused on.
If our focus is on heavenly rewards, our hearts are focused on honoring God; and enjoying that treasure forever.

Prayer; Lord Jesus, teach us to store our treasures in heaven. Help us to embrace the correct priorities in life. Encourage us to love God with all our hearts, and help us to love others as You have loved us. Like orchid blossoms are beautiful to behold, let our treasures be beautiful to God. Amen

Come Close to God: James 4:8

7So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

James 4:7-8 (NLT)

Come close to God, and God will come close to you. God is waiting for you to knock on the door, to reach out to Him. God is waiting, ready to accept us with open arms. When we reach out to God, He welcomes us and draws near to us. Pride causes resistance to God; being humble brings us close to God.
Washing; cleaning our hands means reforming our ways, ceasing to do evil, and amending our actions. A pure heart is free of evil desires and false teachings and is focused on God. It is a heart full of love, compassion, purity.
Our prayer should be; “Create in me a pure heart,ย O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (NIV)
Our loyalty is to God. Our hearts are not pure when divided between God and worldly things. A pure heart fully trusts in God.ย

Will you come close to God, follow His word, praise Him, and go to Him in prayer with a pure heart?

Prayer; Our Heavenly Father, guide us in Your truth. Help us to come close to You, and cease to do evil. Create in us a pure heart, O God focused on You. Like the open and bright flower of the Gerbera Daisy, may our hearts be open and shine brightly with Your love. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen

Guard Your Heart: Proverbs 4:23

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

God’s Word has the power to transform your heart. Reading the scriptures and meditating on God’s Word opens your heart, enlightening and renewing your thoughts and actions. A transformed heart that is right and pure has the right beliefs and focuses on God’s Word.

Like David, in Psalm, 51:10 we need to pray: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

In 1 Samuel 16:17b, The Lord says to Samuel: “People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.โ€

God’s Word can strengthen and heal your heart; guide you in wisdom. Guard your heart; follow the right path, allow God to direct your steps, to keep you from evil.

23-27 Keep vigilant watch over your heart;
thatโ€™s where life starts.
Donโ€™t talk out of both sides of your mouth;
avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.
Keep your eyes straight ahead;
ignore all sideshow distractions.
Watch your step,
and the road will stretch out smooth before you.
Look neither right nor left;
leave evil in the dust.

Proverbs 4:23-27 (MSG)

Will you let God’s Word guide your heart and direct your path?

Prayer; Lord, create in me a clean heart, guide my path. Teach me to guard my heart, to keep my eyes focused on You, and to resist evil. Let my words and actions be acceptable in Your sight. Like the flowers of the bleeding heart plant reflect sunlight, let my heart reflect the light of Christ. Amen.

God’s Wisdom: James 3:17

16Wherever there is jealousy and rivalry, there is disorder and every kind of evil. 17However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure. Then it is peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good deeds, impartial, and sincere. 18A harvest that has God’s approval comes from the peace planted by peacemakers.

James 3:16-18(GWT)

James, in verse 16, is describing worldly wisdom, often driven by envy, jealousy, and selfish ambition, which results in disorder, conflict, and evil. In comparison, God’s wisdom is pure and moral; full of mercy, compassion, it is sincere. His wisdom is impartial, free of prejudice. Trusting in God and His wisdom, and; His ability to provide for us; teaches us to be caring, compassionate, and kind. It encourages us to serve the needs of others and to do good deeds. When you plant peace, along with gentleness, mercy, and compassion, you reap a harvest of righteousness.

16ย Whenever you’re trying to look better than others or get the better of others, things fall apart and everyone ends up at the others’ throats.ย 17ย Real wisdom, God’s wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others. It is gentle and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and cold the next, not two-faced.ย  18 You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating each other with dignity and honor.

James 3:16-18 (MSG)

What wisdom are you following, God’s wisdom of peace, gentleness, and compassion, or worldly wisdom of selfish ambition?

Prayer; Our loving and compassionate Holy Father, we thank you for your grace and mercy. Teach us Godly wisdom, facing each day with kindness and peace. Guide us to be caring and compassionate rather than being jealous and filled with selfish ambition. Let us plant seeds of peace and be impartial and gentle to each other. Like the chrysanthemum flowers are reaching out, spreading in all directions, help us to reach out in peace and spread Your wisdom and love. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen

Living Letter of Christ: 2 Corinthians 3:3

3 You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

2 Corinthians 3:3 (NIV)

Paul is explaining to the people of Corinth; he was just the messenger that delivered the gospel of Christ to them. Through their faith, they became living letters, letters written by the Holy Spirit on their hearts. The indwelling Holy Spirit converts and humbles our hearts filling us with the love of Christ. Now the wonder and power of God are written by the Holy Spirit in our hearts, not on tablets of stone on Mount Sinai. We become a living letter of Christ, ambassadors of love and truth to those who do not know Jesus.

Your very lives are a letter that anyone can read by just looking at you. Christ himself wrote itโ€”not with ink, but with Godโ€™s living Spirit; not chiseled into stone, but carved into human livesโ€”and we publish it.

2 Corinthians 3:3 (MSG)

Are you a living letter for Christ? Have you opened your heart to the Holy Spirit? Have you accepted the truth of the gospel and have it written in your heart?

Prayer; Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for your compassion, grace, and love. Teach us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirits’ direction. Let the Holy Spirit transform us, guide us, and write on our hearts, Your truth. Like azaleas grow and flourish with blossoms, teach us to grow in Your Word and our hearts to blossom and become a living letter from Christ. Amen

Love and Faithfulness: Proverbs 3:3-4

Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.

Proverbs 3:3-4 (NIV)

Solomon is sharing his thoughts on the value of obedience, love, and faithfulness. The (NIV) version of Proverbs 3:3 says, Let love and faithfulness never leave you; other versions say to let; loyalty and kindness, mercy and truth, loyalty and faithfulness, kindness and truth, never leave you. The underlining theme is love and trust wholeheartedly in the Lord always. Binding these loving actions around your neck (keep them close to you), and write them in your heart. A believer is to be continually loyal to God; faithful in following God’s ways. Also, believers need to show mercy and truth to others; always. Then you will find favor with God and gain the respect of people. We should still follow Solomon’s advice by embracing love and faithfulness and binding them to our hearts.

As Christians, we need to focus on letting love and faithfulness guide us in our daily lives. Where are love, faithfulness, and kindness missing in your life?

Prayer; Our Heavenly Father, we thank You for your mercy and grace. Guide us in Your Word and truth. Help us to embrace love and faithfulness and to write them on our hearts. Teach us to treat each other with kindness, mercy, and love. Like the bright flowers of the butterfly weed seem to be reaching outward, let us glow brightly with Your truth and reach out to others with love and faithfulness. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
