We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.
Proverbs 16:9 (NLT)
We often try to control and fine-tune our plans to the way we want. Forming plans for the future is wise, but often our plans are limiting; God can direct us to achieve abundantly more than we ever considered. In humility, we need to realize that God is in control and determining our steps. The best way to plan is to commit our way to God, trusting him to direct us. He will guide us on the correct path, the way best for us, in this world, and eternally.
9 We plan the way we want to live,
Proverbs 16:9 (MSG) β
but only God makes us able to live it.
When in your life has God changed your plans for the better?
Prayer; Our loving Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your love and patience. Teach us to open our hearts to You and to listen to Your direction. Help us to live in faith and trust You to determine our steps. Like the blossoms of the clematis are open reaching toward the sun, let us be open to Your guidance and reach out to You in faith. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen

This verse reminds me of rowing against a strong tide. We would be struggling and working hard at rowing but the boat will still not move ahead in the direction we want. It is indeed foolish to make plans and not submit them to the Lord. Easier said than done but we learn to not cling onto controlling it all.

Hi Manu, I like your example of rowing against a strong tide when we try to control our direction – plans. In many cases, my best-laid plans were changed – directed in new, better directions. Directions I certainly didn’t understand at that time. It is a learning situation; to rely on God with trust and faith. I am still a work in action. π Have a wonderful week!

I think sometimes it can take a long time to see how God has changed our plans for the better. The path can be difficult and we don’t always understand what He’s doing, but we have to keep trusting His wisdom. Trust that He’ll bring us to our promised land. I often remember this verse when I’m struggling with the wait:
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” –Proverbs 13:12
Have a blessed week Jeanne. π³πΊπΏπ¦

Hi Tina, I agree that God’s plans sometimes don’t make sense to us or fit what we want at that time. Hope and faith keep us going. Trust helps with the wait and realizing God is in control and guiding our steps.
It is always great to hear from you! Have a happy and blessed week! ππππΊ
